Vinyl of the Week - 12 April 2020
This week’s album is, in my opinion, a must have. ‘Disraeli Gears’ by Cream was released in 1967 as the follow up to their debut record ‘Fresh Cream’. The trio of Ginger Baker, Jack Bruce and Eric Clapton had definitely gelled as a unit, this album really showcasing their exceptional musicianship. Eric Clapton would go on to be regarded as one of the best guitarists of all time and his playing on this album leaves you in no doubt as to why. The cover art was created by Australian artist Martin Sharp who lived in the same building as Clapton in Chelsea, inspired by the psychedelic movement that was just entering the public consciousness. He put together a collage of black and white cut outs and promotional shots of the band, then hand painted the colours and patterns with fluorescent inks to evoke the album’s electric sound. Result? An awesome record both musically and aesthetically that will make you feel good - DS
