Vinyl of the Week - 24 April 2021
Every now and then an album comes along that is so epic that it goes down in history as a true piece of art. This week we take a brief glance at one such record. A single post could never contain anywhere near enough detail to do this album justice, so my aim is to entice you to do your own deep dive. The year was 1979 and a band called Pink Floyd were in a world of pain. Relationships were at breaking point and due to the band being horribly ripped off by their management company, they were not only broke but facing a huge tax bill as well. The very fact that this album was their last hope might have been one of the reasons it’s so amazing. The Wall is a rock opera about a rockstar called Pink. It covers a broad range of topics that certainly reflect the real life woes of the band. Roger Waters and David Gilmore disagree on the finer details of the making of this album but both agree that it was their defining moment and most important work. This is a double album that really needs to be listened to in its entirety to be fully appreciated. It is so much more than just their eleventh studio album. The Wall is a brilliant story and a real journey both musically and lyrically. It went on to be their second biggest album behind Dark Side. Both are considered to be two of the greatest albums of all time. You can spend an entire day immersed in this epic tale, especially if you watch the movie as well. In my opinion, that’s a day well spent - DS
