Vinyl of the Week - 7 March 2021

Dookie, Green Day

Dookie, Green Day

I was reminded this week of how powerful music can be as I was looking through my vinyl collection and came across this album. When I put it on, that’s when the magic happened. As soon as the first crashing guitar chords streamed into my ears I was instantly transported to a time when I was 22 and had just made the move to Sydney. It was a big change from the small coastal towns I had resided in up until that point, but I had a job and was doing ok. A number of us would finish around 4pm, just as the nightclub under the Epping hotel would be opening, which was directly opposite our workplace. The opening manager became quite fond of us and the feeling was mutual. One day she pulled out a new CD and it soon became the soundtrack to our after work drinks. When I put it on this week I could almost smell the familiar stench of beer and smoke of the old nightclub. What an epic album. As for a favourite track, take your pick - Longview, Basket Case, She, When I Come Around... I love them all. But then I may be a bit biased. Go find an album that defines one of those periods in your life and chances are you’ll be right back there as soon as you hear it, which is pretty powerful stuff - DS
