Vinyl of the Week - 28 August, 2022
DISPLAYABLE vinyl of the week. Released in 1979, The Knack’s debut album went straight to number one. My Sharona was on heavy rotation and the band seemed destined for super stardom. But their overnight success eventually became their undoing. The backlash was swift and the band were heavily criticised, perceived as over-hyped and arrogant. In fact, it was until 1994 when My Sharona was resurrected in the famous gas station scene in Reality Bites that the band and their legacy were reconsidered. Written by lead singer and founding member Doug Fieger, there’s no denying the song is brilliant. Just the opening riff has to be one of the best hooks ever written. But the album is damn good too. They may have been inspired by the Beatles but when I play this record I hear the Stones, the Kinks and even Tom Petty. Being known as a one-hit wonders really doesn’t do them justice. Have a listen and see what I mean - DS
