Vinyl of the Week - 12 June, 2022
DISPLAYABLE vinyl of the week. Last week I found a record that really took me back in time. That time was the early 90’s - and it certainly was a different world back then. The internet wasn’t yet a widespread thing. The smartest thing your phone was able to do was download a polyphonic ring tone if you rang a number and gave some dodgy company your credit card details. Then, if you were lucky, you got something that kind of sounded like a song you liked… However, the music scene was awesome. Spin Doctors formed in New York in the late 80’s. Their debut album Pocket Full of Kryptonite was released in ‘91 and did quite well from just their growing fan base. Then radio stations started playing “Little Miss Can’t Be Wrong” and “Two Princes” and the album started to sell all over the world, reaching number one on many charts. The cover featuring a phone box and the album title written in the footpath are in reference to the track “Jimmy Olsen’s Blues”, a light-hearted song about the character in the Superman comics wanting to make a pass at Lois Lane, convinced he was going to be successful against Superman with his pocket full of Kryptonite.. I really loved this album back in the nineties and it’s just as good as I remember it. The copy I found is quite rare, with only 1000 pressed in purple vinyl. So if you feel like a trip back to a much simpler time, give this one a listen. At the very least it will put a smile on your face. Meanwhile, I think I’m going to download a new ringtone … DS
