Vinyl of the Week - 5 October, 2021
It’s difficult to do a write up on an album that is the very definition of a ‘classic’ album. Perhaps one of the most revered of all time. Released in 1968, the self-named ninth studio album of the Beatles has been written about so extensively, by so many actual music journalists, that I don’t feel that I could add much of value. So instead, I wanted to look at one song that, in my humble opinion, is one of the coolest tunes ever written. The fact that it’s been covered by so many great artists tends to back me up on this. Santana, Frampton, Jeff Healy, Rick Wakeman, The White Stripes and about 200 others… While My Guitar Gently Weeps is universally loved, particularly by those handy with the subject matter. George Harrison invited Eric Clapton to collaborate on the track, and they often performed the song together live. It’s little wonder that it appeals to guitarists the world over. Written by Harrison following the band’s return from India, it stands as testament to his genius as a songwriter. Then of course there’s the rest of the album to listen to. Not a bad way to spend the afternoon - DS
